Chapter 4 Shape & Pattern Study

Observing and recording:

I am not quite sure where my progress is at present.  It is some time since I managed to sit down and work on this Module in a methodical way.  I have done a few bits here and there relating to shape and have now tidied up my samples book, so have something to take to Summer School.  If I pull my finger our I do have time to work through the rest of Chapter 4 as well as the next bit too.  I am happy with my stitching and other mixed media techniques what I need to focus on is the design element to help me think outside the box and become more creative.

I cut several windows in the shape of the poppy seed head for my presentation book so have some silhouettes to play with.  However, I am conscious that these cut-outs look like a  poppy seed head, there is nothing that shows breaking away from the obvious.  My aim in this chapter is to really look at close up details within my photos to find something to be developed as a design detail.

I started with some simple sketches looking at the crown and the seed capsule, but I thought the shape was too regular and again too recognisable.  Just not enough detail to find new shapes to play with.

I played with placing the seed head on a flat surface between two mirrors at right angles to each other, looking for ideas that might produce something different to trace and manipulate. Below are four of the more interesting attempts.  However, they all have five fold symmetry, look a bit blobby therefore I am not sure I want to pursue them further.

Back to the drawing board (ha ha!!)  get the photos and tracing paper out is more like it I think.  This was my work during March, then I got a bit lost again…
