Artists Research:
I haven't been able to do much practical work this week due to the after effects of the dreaded cold which seemed to hang on and hang on. I have done a few bits on the sewing machine and will pesent a longer blog next week when my notes are written up. However, I have been researching the work of well known artists who create and use layered textured surfaces in their work.
My dear friend Norma has kindly lent me some of her books (she has an even bigger collection than I do...) by Fibre Fusion, Val Cambell-Harding, Maggie Grey, Lynda Monk to name just a few.
I have been inspired by
the processes used in the work of Textile Artist Lynda Monk (www.purplemissus.com and http://purplemissus.blogspot.co.uk/). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFNYPRIjI50
Lynda creates textured surfaces with
different mixed media such as Kunin Felt, Tyvek and Lutradur. Often including
ideas Inspired by rust and corrosion, she stitches, burns and melts materials
before adding layers of acrylic media and colour.
Scrunched Scrim techniques by Lynda Monk |
In her book ‘Exploring Creative
Surfaces’ (pages 6-7) Lynda describes how to create a layered textured surface by
bonding scrim to Tyvek then applying heat. Other methods include using gesso with scrunched
scrim, and layering Lutradur with scrunched scrim. These methods are interesting as they can be coloured
using various methods and/or embellished with stitching, beads etc.
Mixed media and stitch by Carolyn Saxby |
I found some images of work by Carolyn Saxby from 2009 and 2015 on Pinterest. At that time Carolyn was using tyvek with layers to help create texture. These tutorials demonstrate incorporating all sorts of different media and stitch.

Although Carolyn uses colour in these stitched pieces, neutral fabric and threads could be substiuted
